Symptoms and Treatment for Urinary Tract Infections
Urinary Tract Infections
What is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection from organisms that are too small to be seen without a microscope called microbes. The most common UTIs are bacterial. Some urinary tract infections are caused by fungi as well as (although much less common) by viruses. UTIs are amongst the most prevalent human infections treated by doctors.
A UTI can occur anywhere in your urinary tract. Your urinary tract is much more complex than typically understood. It includes the kidneys, urethra, bladder and urethra. Most UTIs affect only urethra and bladder in the lower tract. UTIs, however, can also cause issues in the ureters and kidneys in the upper tract. Urinary tract infections of the upper tract are less common than UTIs of the lower tract, but they are also typically more extreme.
