Pap Smear
The Pap smear, also referred to as a Pap test, is a procedure to test for cervical cancer in women. A Pap smear involves collecting cells from your cervix — the lower, narrow end of your uterus that’s at the top of your vagina.
Detecting cervical cancer early with a Pap smear gives you a greater chance at a cure. A Pap smear can also detect changes in your cervical cells that suggest cancer may develop in the future. Detecting these abnormal cells early with a Pap smear is your first step in early detection and possible halting the advancement of cervical cancer.
It is recommended that women get regular Pap smears every three years commencing at the age of 21. You may need more frequent tests if you test positive for HIV or if you have a weakened immune system from chemotherapy or an organ transplant.
If you’re over the age of thirty years and have not had abnormal Pap tests, please enquire with your doctor about having one every five years if the test is combined with a human papillomavirus (HPV) screening.
HPV is a virus that causes warts and increases the chance of cervical cancer. HPV types 16 and 18 are the primary causes of cervical cancer. If you have HPV, you may be at an increased risk of developing cervical cancer.
Women over the age of 65 with a history of normal Pap smear results may be able to stop having the test.
